the Pearl of the Moselle

On the Moselle River in the German state of Rijland-Palatinate lies the town of Reil. The narrow winding streets of this quiet town are home to a winery with a rich history. Since 1684, the winery of Julius Treis has been making the finest Riesling wines.

The story we discovered about this winery is special, not to mention the specific wine. We are therefore very proud that this will be the first story of Beyond The Bottle.

Two college friends who embarked on an adventure together

One morning Tobias Treis received a phone call from his college friend Ivan Giovanett from South Tyrol, Italy. He was at the Frankfurt airport and was very curious about a piece of land Tobias had told him about. The land was for sale and consisted largely of red slate. Something unique for land not directly on the Mosel.

Once arrived, Ivan immediately felt the magic of this place. In complete silence, with no buildings or through roads, there lay a beautiful piece of land that was ideally suited for viticulture. From that moment on, they knew for sure, this was where they would start a project together. This was their chance to grow wine in their own way, without family traditions.
